Timmer Posted August 7, 2016 Report Share Posted August 7, 2016 (edited) When I ordered my MKX last month I asked the dealer about body side molding. My thinking was that it would help reduce door dings, etc. I was surprised to learn that body side molding is not a factory option. It would (could) be installed by the dealer for around. $400.00 USD. The molding would be ordered in the same color as my MKX (Luxe Metallic) and rather than affixing by drilling and riveting, it would be adhered to the vehicle, apparently with a 3M double-sided adhesive tape of some sort. Seems like a good idea, but maybe not... Wondering if anyone else has added body side molding of this sort to their MKX. Any thoughts or experiences with it, good or bad? At the end of WW II, the cars in my family were a vintage Terraplane & a 1940 Nash. Fuzzy dice & curb feelers...Ha! He installed black fake fur on his dash and installed off white fur carpet throughout the entire floor. I remember vividly when he drove to my place to show me the new look. I opened the passenger and before I could get in he said from now on anyone who gets in his car has to take their shoes off, even he was driving in socks. I said "really like REALLY". He said yup. I said this is Canada after xmas until April/May this carpet will be destroyed. After two weeks he finally removed it not because of dirt or the color. It was the putrid smell of all our buddies feet. Sometimes the entire car smelled like a hockey dressing room. I'd forgotten about that until you guys triggered something in my head. I installed a molding I found on Ebay. There were three types available - a black, a chrome and a painted one. I went with the chrome and after putting masking tape on the MKX, cleaning with an alcohol towelette and applying the primer (which was a small tube with built-in applicator) the molding appplied with a 3M sticky back. Back in the day my brother-in-law had a used AMX Javelin. He removed every single light bulb from the dash and painted each one red with nail polish so that (in his words) "I want to make my instruments look like a race car". He used KIWI shoe polish to blacken his tires and for the white walls he used Ajax and white wax crayons. There were no products back then other than at performance shops. He pin striped the crap out of the car. Around fender wells deck lid and everywhere except the belt line. What an idiot he was. But....I still miss those days Now you buy a vehicle and the most you can do is add an air freshener. Back then we wanted the sounds of headers, glass paks, Thrush and HP. 'Back in the day', cars of that nature had glass packs that purred with mellow sensuous tones, etc. But, you ask "What happened?" But....I still miss those days Remember when they sold tire sidewall overlays, you added to the side of a tire when you mounted it to make a "cheap" blackwall into a deluxe "whitewall"? I once used gloss black spray paint to spray the sidewalls and a bottle or two of whiteout (raised lettering) to sell an old Chevy. Now you buy a vehicle and the most you can do is add an air freshener. Hold the phone, your overlooking a seriously important Trump or Clinton bobblehead (sadly, gone are the days of the Sarah Palin bobblehead). And of couse the all-important radar detector, cell phone holder, and blacked out windows to hide one's identity. Now we want lots of HP but only want to hear the quality sound system.
