2016 Lincoln MKX Excessive Wind Noise

There is a TSB 16-0058 applicable to MKXs built prior to 1/26/16 that addresses a whistling noise in the side view mirrors, but folks here have complained of wind noise, not a whistling noise...may not be relevant.

Plugged in my VIN and it states that my window sticker has not been issued yet. (2009 MKX).

 

 

I would think that after a few years they drop the file.  Their might be other site that kept older window sticker.  "Google Window Sticker for (your VIN)"

 

But it should be in the ETIS systems.

I got my issue (wind noise) resolved last week.  I had to go to a different dealership other than the one where we made the purchase from.   TSB 160088B: Replace the windshield and both stuffers.  Huge difference for noise.   Windshield upgraded with "soundscreen" http://carlite.com/acoustic-windshield/.  Pillars had another plastic piece added (epoxied) to the plastic moldings which prevents the air from getting trapped inside of the channel.

Part numbers used for TSB: 

1 FA1Z*5803100*C  Glass - Windscreen

1 FA1Z*5803178*A  Retainer

1 FA1Z*5803179*A Retainer

 

MKX is more enjoyable to drive.

How does the windshield replacement differ from the OEM "acoustic-laminated glass" touted by Lincoln to minimize NVH?

 

Have the alterations to the A-pillar moldings been incorporated into current MKX production/assembly?

 

Does anyone have photos of the moldings applied per the TSB-described fix?

Hey Cosmos. I have a buddy who works at the Oakville plant. He told me when I was looking and shopping to.

1. Make sure it had Sync 3 which would be a late November build.

2. If possible to get a Jan 16 build or later. There was a slightly more hefty Front windshield installed as well as new windshield mouldings that had a flange underneath. The two were built to be installed with each other. It is basically an extra defence against wind getting in and underneath causing some unwanted noise. Mine was built late March and I got it late April . Was on the lpt for 2 weeks prior.

Thanks, Shoe...the next time I visit my dealer I'll inspect a recent-build MKX and compare with my September 2015 build. As with any vehicle, I can detect some frontal wind noise, but I've never considered it to be inordinate.

I have MKX 2016. I also have lot of wind noise. Before this I had MKX 2013 and that was  very quite.

i went to dealership, they sealed the side mirrors but it is of no use. Still heavy wind sound when on highways. 

Lincoln shall find the solution to this.

They have the fix. I had mine done a couple weeks ago. It's much better.

Adam, I think the build shall be before Nov 2015 as I took the delivery in 1st week of Nov 2015.

I think it may have been the windshield and/or trim.

Just leased a new 2016 MKX. I love the car but disappointed with the excessive wind noise hitting the windshield beginning at 60mph. It gets louder as you go faster. At first I did have the whistle noise- but that was gone when I adjusted my side mirror.The dealer tried to tape and remedy the situation but failed. They tested other similar models and said this is "normal" for this model. I called Lincoln that this is Not normal and should try to fix the problem. This is disappointing for a luxury class and ruins the driving experience. I can buy a car half the price and it would be quieter. Live and learn. I want to add that my 2013 MKX was much quieter bc it had a "sound screen" windshield. Very disappointed with Lincoln this time around.

My MKX is super quiet as well, even when I'm not rockin' out to my Revel sound system... ;-))

I am having this issue for the last 6 months. the current Lincoln dearler is not able to resolve the issue with TSB 100058 and TSB 16-00088. I am assuming that they have really replaced the Retainers. 

I am going to try some other dealer for service. It is terrible to spend high price for the luxury car and and then total disappointment.

This shall be reported to Lincoln to provide the solution or replace the vehicle.

Recently I drove Nissan Murano platinum and so quite at 75MPH. When I sat in MKX even at 60 MPH I was unable to listen properly from my co-passenger.

Every single source that has tested dBs in the MKX consistently rates it as one of the quietest vehicles on the road.  If it is really so loud in your car that you can't hear the person next to you talking, something is seriously wrong.

No wind noise at 75 mph in an MKX? I would love to have access to some data displaying interior dB levels in a current model MKX at 75 mph. The 2013 Tesla S Hybrid recorded an amazing 62.1 dB at 75 mph...far, far quieter than almost any car in the world. And almost beyond belief, the 2010 Lincoln MKT recorded 61.5 dB at 75 mph, rated the 2nd quietest of the top 10 quietest cars in the world in recent times. Compare those numbers to a more common range of 65-75 dB at 75 mph or lesser speeds.

 

Even considering that interior noise levels are attributable to multiple sources, not just wind noise, it appears to me to be a very subjective appraisal of the current MKX to claim no wind noise at 75 mph. I suspect that most owners would report some wind noise commencing at approximately 60 mph in almost any vehicle.

75 mph is 120 km/h.  There's plenty of wind noise in these vehicles at that speed.  Quiet relative to other vehicles (mainstream) though is likely.

 

I think there is also another factor - a physiological one.  Isn't it true that as we age, the spectrum of frequencies we can detect are reduced?

 

While far from a scientific instrument, I have an app on my phone called DBmeter (or something like that) and have used it in the past to measure interior noise at high speed. I don't think I was ever able to get under 72 db or so, at 90 to 100 km/h.  But still felt that the interior was very quiet.  Will try the app today on my new X.  Have to be stealthy about it, though, as the fine for using the cellphone (distracted driving) is quite high now.

I'll try to do the same today while driving down the interstate. I'll do the test in our Black MKX which runs on 21", which slightly decreases the ride comfort and possibly increases road noise.

Update just attached screen shot of measurements.

Method: stereo was on at beginning with kids taking and HVAC running. Then turned stereo of and left HVAC on. Average speed was approximately 50 mph and top speed was 70mph. Vehicle MKX running 21" Pirelli's. Max db with stereo and kids taking. Max db at 70 mph 62db.
