Interesting clock action on trip from California to Arizona

This past weekend I drove from Southern California to Arizona. At the border the clock advanced by an hour. California is in the Pacific time zone and Arizona is on Mountain time. But, Arizona does not observe daylight savings and California does. So, from mid-March through early November they are on the same time. 

 

Another interesting aspect of this was the fact that the arrival time on the navigation screen changed when crossing into Arizona. If the system is smart enough to recognize a time zone change shouldn't it have made the adjustment to the arrival time once it determined a time zone was going to be crossed when the destination was entered?

 

On the return trip it did just the opposite and subtracted an hour from the current time and the destination time.

 

This is on a Sync 3 system.

There are portions of 14 states that are in dual time zones, including parts of my home state (Indiana) and my current resident state (Oregon). It only gets really tricky depending on whether those various zones recognize daylight savings time.

 

If you want to get really, really tricky, ask the question of a group of folks to name the eastern, western, southern & northern-most states of the 50 U.S. states. Then, if you want to start a riot, insist that a single state (Alaska) meets all but the southern-most definition.

 

I am curious how our MKX clock and nav would handle the many existing time-nav anomalies.

The cartographic and navigational point of reference in this inquiry is the 180th meridian aka antimeridian/180th longitude which is 180 degrees both EAST & WEST of the Prime Meridian, i.e. 0 degrees longitude at Greenwich England. Passing north-south through the Aleutian Islands in the vicinity of Alaska's Semisopochnoi Island (Aleut: Unyak), the 180th longitude is a common division line between the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. At the 180th longitude, west ends and east begins. Since Semisopochnoi Island in Alaska is located at ~179 degrees+ EAST longitude, just a few miles into the Eastern Hemisphere, it is both the easternmost and westernmost body of land in the state of Alaska.

 

The International Date Line (IDL) follows much of the 180th meridian, but not all of it. In the Bering Straits, the IDL varies for U.S & Soviet political purposes and the vicinity of Semisopochnoi Island where the IDL zigzags well into the Eastern Hemisphere's longitudes to accommodate maintaining the island in Alaska's westernmost time zone. The IDL also zigzags in the West Somoa and New Zealand island groups in the Southern Hemisphere.

 

During the cold war era, I often flew in the proximity of Semisopochnoi Island (U.S.) and hostile Soviet regions in the Bering Sea. When crossing the 180th longitude, it was paramount that position reports transmitted back to our home stations were clearly coded to specify that we were in EAST latitudes, not WEST latitudes.
