My MKX is an 09 and on the gen 1's they were installed with a lip around the perimeter of the sensor. This would hide any cracking caused by flexing of the sensor as the car was being driven. (They do project approx 1/16" from the surface, not a big deal in my opinion). It would seem that the problem's stem from the newer style where the mounting hole's edges are exposed. I spoke with a painter who has done restoration work on my classics. The problem might be that the factory is not changing the amount of flex agent used from the basic paint to the tri coats. The cars may be leaving the factory perfect but cracking when the weather temperature dips. The other suggestions: problem may be the undecoats are just too thick for around the sensors or too much hardner is being used on the plastic. akirby Posted August 30, 2016 Report Share Posted August 30, 2016 That makes sense that it would only affect the tri-coats. Maybe they aren't adding the flex agent to the mid-coat. mmoretti Posted August 30, 2016 Report Share Posted August 30, 2016 I'm not so sure it's just tri coats because my car is tuxedo black which is a metallic like allure blue and the others. My sensors look worse than any posted, very visible large cracks around whole rim. Rstierney asked me in this thread if my paint was a tri coat process or not to which I wasn't sure. No one chimed in confirming or denying... It's a black (or blue) base with clearcoat mixed with metallic flakes. Anyone know if this is a tri coat process? Cosmos36 Posted August 30, 2016 Report Share Posted August 30, 2016 Back in the day, when I frequented the F-150 forum for broad issues (I now only monitor for 2.7 engine comments), there was a forum member who worked for the vendor that supplied paints, fixatives, paint booth & dip tank equipment-you name it-to Ford's two assembly plants. If a question ever arose about paint issues, that person would be all over every paint related inquiry with factual, relevant information. More drips runs etc. There's a few runs on the drivers side door I'll take a pic of tomorrow. Same build date as mine 10/15. Someone should be fired or shot for letting these cars leave the factory like this trying to represent a luxury brand. I don't know if it's carelessness or its just normal practice at this point. Asked him how he liked his MKX so far and he stated the issue with the throttle body going south at 1200 miles and the center console door stopped working properly along with a new one, the center steering wheel cover some how popped off........ Was able to take a peek at his sensors and both front and rear were cracked bad like mmoretti's. 7/16 build. (Not a happy camper after pointing that out) Question I was told by my dealer that all the Black Labels use different paint and are painted at a different facility then the normal run of the mill production MKX's. If this was true, it would explain the Black Label in tri coat white I saw with flawless bumpers. Any one know whats different between the two tri coat's? shoeguy Posted September 23, 2016 Report Share Posted September 23, 2016 Sounds wierd. It does not make sence for the Blk Label MKX to be painted at a different facility than the normal ones. They would then require to be painted and shipped to Oakville for final assembly. It does sound possible that a different paint is used in the same Oakville paint shop as all the others, then come down the same line afterwards. I will ask my buddy that works at the plant and see what he has to say. He generally works at final inspection. Prior to drive off the line. Shoe. However, we do have an issue with the cup holders in back center console. They "broke" doesn't pop out when pushed. Part is on back order but dealer will replace when it arrives. The first few pics are hard to see. Most of the cracking on these are on the front 4 sensors in the middle of the bumper, not the sides. The rear sensors have cracking on the inside.
