IggyAZ Posted May 12, 2016 Report Share Posted May 12, 2016 In my 2016 MKX it seems it pulls in exhaust fumes into the AC vents and you smell like the rotten egg smell. This only happens when entering the highway ramp where I accelerate up to speed. Has anyone had something similar? I do plan on mentioning it to my dealer on my next oil change service.. enigma-2 Posted May 13, 2016 Report Share Posted May 13, 2016 The past problems seem to be related to exhaust fumes being drawn into the cabin through the rear cabin exhaust vents. As an experiment you could turn the hvac blower up high and try to duplicate the conditions present when you last smelled the exhaust. The high speed blower will pressurize the cabin, forcing air 'out' through the cabin vents. I have an 09 and have only noticed the rotten egg smell a couple of times. mmoretti Posted July 5, 2016 Report Share Posted July 5, 2016 I noticed this on an mkz loaner I just had. Do not notice in my mkc. I'm waiting for a appointment and in waiting area the tv has the local (NJ) cable channel and the messages in the bottom are "sponsored" by FORD. They just popped up a banner message stating something about ford and the exhaust fumes. It switched off quickly before I could read the whole thing. Probably in all news feeds. As likely most folks know, SUV configurations invite the intrusion of dust, exhaust fumes, water spray, etc. but it's sounding as it some X vehicle have an abnormal issue. I have noticed this since day one with my MKX, I actually noticed it during my test drive, even mentioned it to the salesman. I live in area that has a number of hills, and I notice it daily. It is horrible if you accelerate to pass a vehicle on a two-lane highway! I have an appointment in two weeks for vehicle maintenance and you can bet this will be addressed with my dealership. As this is the first SUV I've ever owned, I can't say for any others, but my 09 MKX is quiet, dust free, exhaust free and has never has water in the doors or floorboards. crabbydirt43 Posted August 31, 2016 Report Share Posted August 31, 2016 I took my '16 MKX into my local dealer for the first oil change and mentioned this problem, along with three other issues that had to be addressed. Two weeks later, the other issues were fixed and my oil was changed, but the smell is still there. It's not a constant smell, but it's there if you ever accelerate quickly. My dealership said they were very aware that some of them have an odor and some do not. They asked me to be patient and give the car time to break in. The smell comes from certain sulfur compounds in burning gasoline reacting in the catalytic converter. Happens with every car ever built, but I wonder if it's more noticeable on SUV's and CUV's due to the boxy back ends creating a low pressure zone. One possible fix is to try a different brand of gasoline. Another is never run the HVAC in the recirculation mode. It is strange however, that some Edge's have the problem and others don't. Not sure about Jeep, but as far as any SUV we have from GM,Lexus, BMW or Audi we never had any fumes or smells from hard acceleration. However, with everything Ford we have. Acknowledged they drove it and did smell the exhaust fumes.(rotten egg smell) but was unable to track down where it was leaking from to get into the air system. It happens in regular outside circulation mode. Will have to check and see if it happens while in recirculation mode. This needs to continue to be addressed as it is a major health risk even with the letter stating it is within government guide line limits. It still stinks up the car.
