Sync 3

After 2 days with Sync 3,

It's definitely faster and sharper looking that MyLincoln Touch, but there's a few quirks for me.

Pros:

Speed

Pinch to zoom

Click on Nav destination, shows a Home and Work button that display minutes to each based on your current location

Easy to reach Buttons

Missing Features:

Phone Quick Dial:  Can search by incoming, outgoing, etc. but the "favorite"   Quick Dial option is gone.  It was nice to store favorites and to be able to dial with a click of a button rather than use voice.

GPS Favorites:  Same thing, used to be able to click Navigation, favorites, and send to Home, Work, etc. without having to reach for the touch screen.  You can cancel a route via the steering wheel button but you can't initiate one

Contact Pictures:  Surprised they didn't work out for an iphone to download contact photos to the screen.  Would be nice.

I suppose the adaptation of the CarPlay and Android Auto will add features, but I'm surprised those items are missing.

Overall it's a great system, would be nice if the Quick Dial could return via software update

Google Auto....
I'm trying to grasp what it will do for Sync 3 owners?

Being an old fart it just sounds like it will interface your Smartphone with Sync 3.

Now with that said It says it will use Google Maps for travel. Instead of the imbedded maps already in the Sync 3?

It talks about Skype so I guess you can connect with Skype and have a chat with someone instead of a phone call?

Please enlighten us what you think it will do or change in everyday usage? I guess I have to upgrade my data plan soon.lol

The nice thing is that even Sync 2 users will be able to upgrade also sometime in late 2016.

Basically with sync 3 and android auto you will be able to mirror some apps from your phone to your car screen. There are many reasons why this is great but the main one being that your software will be updated constantly. Since google maps is by al accounts the best routing software you will be able to use that and it will never be outdated. Hopefully Waze will get there soon too. Sync 2 my Lincoln/myford touch will not be upgraded.

Not sure if you have much experience with the old MFT / MLT (Sync 2) but is there any additional functionality for entertainment (or climate, or nav) available in the center DIC screen?  Can you still move through pre-set stations by using the up/down arrows on the steering wheel while in the Entertainment window?

Is there any way to set the home screen so it does NOT include the map 'tile'?  Maybe have the left half as entertainment and the right split into phone and/or climate?

That I am aware of. But are the my Lincoln touch's going to get a free upgrade to sync 3 or will they forever by obsolete?

I referenced an URL of an aftermarket company, this has nothing to do with Ford/Lincoln. So the answer is Ford/Lincoln has no plans to upgrade at least that is what I have read. And it does not make sense for them to offer an upgrade, their form of an upgrade is a new vehicle, :)

In the past what's happened when they changed Sync versions, was the hardware changed (became more advanced).

In order to go from Sync 2 to Sync 3, you would also need to change the Sync module and perhaps other hardware as well. Probably very expensive.

Yes I had a 2013 with the old MFT and am very familiar with it.

The steering wheel controls work all the time

I do not think you can re-arrange the home screen tiles, but I do much prefer the map being 50% (losing the climate to hard buttons) vs the 25% quarter split.

Overall it works well, minus my complaints of losing the quick dial and saved GPS favorites that were accessable via the steering wheel control.

Only weird glitch on the climate is that there is a hard button for all the controls including the heated seats, however you must use the touch screen to access the heated steering wheel

Maybe those "early adapters" who got My Lincoln Touch instead of SYNC 3 weren't so unlucky after all.

I ordered my MKX on October 26th and picked it up from the dealer on Jan. 4.  Took it for its first trip on Wednesday, and had a massive fail of the SYNC 3 Navigation unit.

Lost GPS, speed limit signs on speedo., etc.  It also locked up several other controls, including radio tuning and volume, climate, and voice controls.  Would not release after shutting off car and getting out.  Had to do master reset to regain controls.  (2nd one in a week).  Left it alone after I got the controls back.

Going into the shop Monday.  Too much fun.  I guess quality control missed this one.

It looks like the YouTube video link I added in one of the earlier messages is no longer good.

Here is how you can find it.

Google " Ford's Sync 3 Hands On - Full Tutorial "

Hope this helps you find it as I'm unable to add any web links here for some reason.

Typical computer stuff. Hard to predict. Initial failure rate can be high and the sad part is that it usually doesn't give any warning.

The good news is that once a piece of computer has some time on it it has a good chance of being good for a very long time.

I got the nav unit on my '13 Santa Fe replaced 3 times while it was near new. Very frustrating at the time but it's been good ever since.... knock on wood.

Consider it a dealer test as to how well they are going to take care of you. Keep us posted please.

Off to the dealer to get it diagnosed now.

I agree that it is typical "computer stuff".  I too have found in the past that many electronic components either fail almost immediately or last pretty much forever.  I guess that is the nature of solid state things.

The dealer has been good so far.  Let us hope replacement components are easily obtainable and that the parts are easy for the technician to replace..

Question, my wife drove the car last week and she has an iphone, she found that she is unable to play her podcasts unless she is plugged in to the usb port, I don't have that issue with android.   Is there something we can do or just the way lincoln interfaces with apple, if that is the case that is pretty annoying (Sync 3)

I have had my 2016 MKX now for 3 days and have driven over 500 miles.
I have used many GPS's and other techie stuff but I must say the I'm glad I waited for the Sync 3.

The GPS Navigation is really quick and full featured. Changing routes when I don't take an exit is very quick and as accurate as the maps.

The only thing I want to know is how to lower the volume of the GPS when its giving directions.  Any ideas?
