Adam Posted May 9, 2018 Report Share Posted May 9, 2018 The best I've ever seen on a long trip was 8.9 l/100 km (vehicle reported, not calculated) which is 26.7 US MPG. Although I've only owned the turbo models. And 40-something MPH on a freeway?? I spend 15 hours a week on the Ontario 401 (I believe North America's busiest highway?) and lock in at 120 KPH (~75 mph) with the sense that if I go slower I'd be smashed!!! I still think the Edge is the best vehicle in its class, in terms of vehicle dynamics and I think the MKX is a much better buy than the XT5 (is most natural competitor). But, physics is physics and fuel economy is not a strength of Ford's SUV lineup. The MKX is the least fuel efficient vehicle I've owned. Timmer Posted May 9, 2018 Report Share Posted May 9, 2018 We're just back home to the Midwest after snowbirding in Southern California for the winter. My 2016 MKX Reserve 3.7L AWD was packed to the gills on the way back. Fully loaded with two passengers, back seats down and a Thule rooftop cargo carrier packed full as well... Returned via Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Salt Lake City, Across Wyoming and South Dakota, then points north. Plenty of scenic mountain driving, with long stretches of 80 MPH speed limits across the remote flats. I usually drove 6-8 MPH faster than the speed limit. (72 in a 65; 76-78 in a 70; sometimes 89-90 in an 80, etc.) Mileage averaged low 20's, and dropped to 17-18 MPG going 90ish. Agree that MKX MPG isn't the best out there. But my PPM (Pleasure Per Mile) was off the charts high! And then again, I didn't buy an MKX for the fuel mileage... In sum, the vehicle ran flawlessly. Such a joy to drive! Ford engineers are the real experts in fuel economy and work to get the absolute best rating the can. Not one of us can ever beat it. No way. In hindsight, anyone can get 40+, under specific circumstances. I reset my info screen and coasted. Got over 60 mpg (for nearly a half mile). They got 28 with the 2.7T on the MKX (AWD) and 31 with the 2.0 T on the Edge. In usual urban driving with the less efficient 3.7 NA engine, would likely be closer to 25. All of that is without the active grill shutters described in the OP, and it does not take into account all the nice changes that are likely coming in 2019. Those numbers are not great, but nobody should buy a 4000 pound SUV and expect great highway economy. However, a cigarette lighter plug-in is required. But, a little backyard ingenuity should assist in solving that issue with our MKXs. It's reported that wiring several of the devices in series may result in attaining results in excess of expectations, including free fuel mysteriously manufactured by your vehicle.
