30 Highway MPG...Nice...Active Grill Shutters?

I frequently get 28-30 (Aircon on/off) MPG Highway on a Reserve FWD 3.7l.  City is always 17-18 MPG.  Any similar results out there?

Never seen 30 best on hwy I got is 24. Currently running average of 17.8.

We’re averaging about 21 in mixed driving but a lot of that is semi highway (45-55 mph).

Over nearly 2 1/2 years with a 2.7TT, I maxed out at slightly over 31 on a level 55-60mph trip of ~200 rural miles...averaging 19-24mpg in daily suburban use (no commutes or gridlocked traffic). Long duration freeway driving at 65 mph yields ~ 24-27mpg. Mileage between freeway fill-ups averages 436 miles.

My 3.5L gets 21 in mixed driving.   24-27 on the highway.   But mine has two turbos, 470 lb/ft of torque and is installed in a 2018 F150 supercab.  Amazing.

You're not going to get vaguely close to 37mpg - at any speed - in an mkx. 30 mpg is pushing it.

.... if you live in LA, just for fun, pull into HOV and do 45 mph for 15-20 minutes. You'll make ton of new friends.

For straight highway flat driving, at 45 MPH running at 1,300 RPM (is it right with 3.7L?), it should get up to 35-37 MPG on highway, both FWD and AWD. AWD MPG usually dives down fast at 75 MPH speed with increasing gap from FWD MPG. The best highway MPG is always at 6th top gear, at the lowest speed and lowest RPM running without 5th gear kicking in suddenly.

 

I plan to do a lot of 45 MPH max driving on empty highways across USA. My previous car before 2010 BMW X3, a 2016 Kia Sportage, required a minimum 39 MPH speed in order for 6th gear to stay at 1150 RPM, which got up to 50 MPG.

 

Interesting. I was going North on the 395 (Flat) when I first noticed 28MPG/HWY.  Cruise Control was set at 75 MPH and aircon was on. 

 

I noticed it again (I reset the Fuel Economy Computer after a fuel up, yet again) on the CA-65 (Flat) with the cruise set to 60 MPH and aircon on was still 28MPG.  I tested with the aircon off and got 30MPG.

I noted that none of the above posts responded to the OP's mention of Active Grill Shutters (AGS).

 

AGS is available only on Reserve models with 20" wheels as I recall.

 

Edit addition: Compared to many early postwar & current small displacement vehicles, IMO the MKX's 2000rpm at 70mph is just loafing.

Er, Dude, I do live in LA.  The slow lane is not going to be where you are getting a constant 45 mph. The slow lane is where people are getting on and off and it can be basically stop and go.  You're going to be lucky to get 18 mpg if you stay on the far right of the 405, 5, or 134.

And, I'm sorry, but the stuff about getting 40 MPG is beyond ridiculous. That's not even in the league of reality.  First of all, you don't even own a MKX - how in the world would you know what the real world MPG is?  Second, you're dealing with an upright vehicle that weights more than 4000 pounds.  Unless you're turning off the engine, dropping it into neutral, and cruising down the hills, you're not getting 40 mpg.

 

My driving is mostly highway miles. I take the metro to work about 70% of the time, and I put about 12,000 miles on the car each year driving to hiking trailheads or taking my bike somewhere to go riding.  Even with that use pattern, I am well short of 20 MPG overall.

 

The MKX is a great vehicle for what it is.  But, you're not even close if you're expecting 40 mpg on the highway. 

 

I don't even thing a FWD Edge with the 2.0T would get that kind of fuel economy.

It is a shame there is no software control AGS override to open for testing.

I believe Black Label has it as well with 20" wheel.

 

Yup, with AGS.  Weird that all MKCs come standard with AGS at all trim levels, but just the Reserve 20" and Black Label 20", for the MKX.

I'm guaranteed over 32 MPG, for sure, at 45 MPH straight, even with AWD. I think it will be between 33 MPG and 37 MPG at absolute top. I will consider 40 MPG very lucky and don't expect it, but FWD version may be able to touch there for a few seconds.

 

My 2008 Ford F-150 4.2L V6 8-feet bed truck rated at 4,900 curb-weight gets up to 30.5 MPG at 45 mph speed straight driving, and this engine doesn't have any variable valve timing. I used to own a 1992 Buick LeSabre with 3800 engine, and it got up to 38.5 MPG at 48 mph speed. 3800 engine requires 48 mph speed to engage 4-speed overdrive, or it kicks back to 4-speed without overdrive at 45 mph or less.

 

Definitely a possibility

The Duratec 37 is a 3.7 L (3726 cc/227 CID) version of the Cyclone V6 intended to power heavier or premium vehicles. The 3.7 L's additional displacement comes from an increase in bore diameter to 95.5 mm (3.76 in), stroke remains identical to the 3.5 L at 86.7 mm (3.41 in). Ford Power Products sells this engine as the CSG-637 for industrial uses starting in mid-2015, which replaced the 4.2L Essex.

A Hiroshima, Japan assembled Mazda MZI 3.7 was installed in the 2008 Mazda CX-9 and was the first 3.7 L Cyclone V6 to see production. The first Ford application of the 3.7 L was the 2009 Lincoln MKS.

A few days before the 2009 Los Angeles International Auto Show, Ford unveiled a new version of the 3.7 L for the 2011 Mustang, making it the first Duratec-badged V6 since the Lincoln LS to be used in a production rear-wheel drive car. This version of the 3.7 L features Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT); delivers 31 mpg_‑US (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg_‑imp) highway mileage in the Mustang, and was the first production engine to deliver in excess of 300 hp (224 kW) and 30 MPG.^[5]

It's very easy to cherrypick fuel mileage by constantly resetting the fuel mileage minder while underway under select scenarios. I've noted 74 MPG on the MKX for a few minutes by doing so, but we all know that's not a reasonable/credible MPG number to report.

 

Walt...good luck avoiding road rage on any roadway except Nevada Route 376 between Battle Mountain & Tonopah at 3:00 AM traveling any distance at a steady 45 MPH for long enough to claim an AVERAGE fuel mileage number. Also, don't bother reporting unless the fuel mileage that you report is achieved in a current model MKX.
