VisionPilot Posted August 15, 2016 Report Share Posted August 15, 2016 (edited) I just noticed that when I start the engine after the car has been sitting for a couple of hours, or especially overnight, that it makes a grinding / rattling sound for a few seconds, almost like something isn't getting oil, or lost whatever it had. It does go away after a few seconds. A warm start does not produce the sound. Anyone else have this issue? I've seen a few references via Google searches to a similar issue with the 3.5 ecoboost engine, but nothing for the 2.7. I never notice it when I start the car from within, with the doors closed, due to all of the sound deadening. Thanks. Cosmos36 Posted August 15, 2016 Report Share Posted August 15, 2016 I suspect you're hearing the same sound that my MKX emits at startup and has been discussed earlier on this forum & other forums reporting on 2.7 engines. The sound is a waste gate rattle and the exhaust note 'rumble' for the following ~ minute is caused by the ECM tinkering with fuel, timing, and emission settings. All the racket is somewhat disconcerting (and embarrassing to some), but it's all in the plan and harmless. You likely note that after ~ minute the rpm decreases to a quieter idle. Crazy hot in this area. Hotter than Jamaica at times. 1000000% humidity. No rain grass and golf courses are brown and burned. Transit and some train tracks warped. MKX ac works just fine! Adam Posted August 15, 2016 Report Share Posted August 15, 2016 No strange sounds on startup here. I do find the engine to be quite un-refined sounding on cold start. It does settle down to a quiet idle after about 30 seconds or so. And agreed on the A/C. No complaints whatsoever... And I tend to keep mine at or above 20 degrees. It sounds like it's an old diesel for several seconds. I'm going to see if I can upload a video. Ok, I don't see how to upload a video... can anyone help with that? Second, that noise sounds to be far beyond normal albeit I still believe it to be related to the turbo waste gates/POPs. But definitely, it must be corrected because it's not normal. I'm positive it can be easily diagnosed, either by a tech who has experienced the noise before or can detect its origin when your X is upon on a lift when remotely started. While reasonably certain that something either needs adjusting or replaced, a trip to the dealer very soon is recommended. Please keep us informed. AC cools well, I just wish the step function (where the fan speed drops and the cooling seems to be reduced) between 72 and 73 degrees. I agree that it sound like "oil starvation" but I've never heard it as loud of often. It would be a very rare event if I ever heard anything. On a side note I really like the led headlights. That was the only option I wanted but wasn't available. I could have ordered one with it but decided it wasn't a big enough deal to wait. After examining early build MKXs arriving at dealers, I was very apprehensive about fit & finish when ordering in July 2015. But, my MKX came through almost without fault to my extremely critical eye. However, I do believe Lincoln is still just short of import standards regarding external seam widths, panel alignments, & the fitment of window, grill, and other chrome and/or molding pieces. On a positive note, I'm confident that Lincoln's build quality is incrementally improving and you'll be pleased with your new X. I certainly wouldn't have any apprehensions about mechanical issues. That being said, if I was ordering a vehicle loaded with all sorts of complex electronic devices (standard or optional), I would be less confident, but that's not the type of vehicles in my stable. VisionPilot Posted August 24, 2016 Author Report Share Posted August 24, 2016 (edited) The car went to the dealer Monday evening, the 22nd of Aug. They began looking at it on the 23rd. They then opened a case with Lincoln/Ford, even though I provided the equivalent TSB issued for the exact same issue on the 3.5 EB motors. Waiting to hear back what they are going to do. What they should do to fix it, is what they do for the same thing on the 3.5's, replace all 4 variable timing cam phasers, along with the timing chain. Although, at just over 800 miles when it was dropped off (started happening around the 500 mile mark), I doubt the chain has had enough wear to stretch. I know that on the longitudinal mounted truck engines, it's about a 9 hour job. No clue what that equates to with our transverse mounted engines. Time will tell. The 2.7 has a completely different timing chain layout, e.g., two chains running on separate pulleys, etc. Thanks for keeping us posted. akirby Posted August 24, 2016 Report Share Posted August 24, 2016 In all fairness the dealer can't just assume that it's the same problem as the 3.5 if the TSB doesn't specifically cover the 2.7L - Ford probably wouldn't pay them for the warranty work if they were wrong. Cosmos36 Posted August 24, 2016 Report Share Posted August 24, 2016 If (a big IF) the issue is related to the frontside (passenger side of the transverse 2.7) of the engine, any required work would likely be facilitated by the 2.7's integrated front cover (IFC). The IFC contains the water pump, oil passages for the cam phasing, oil cooler, oil filter, and accessory drive components. It is a preassembled engine component which expedites factory engine assembly & maintenance/repair of the 2.7. The IFC is one of several features that makes the 2.7 such a tech marvel. They were in contact with Lincoln last Wednesday, but did not perform the testing that was prescribed yet, instead, choosing to work on another car that came in after mine, and required extensive work. To me, it would have made more sense to just knock out the test, then return to the bigger project while waiting again for more feedback from Lincoln. So... my car has just been sitting... in driving thunderstorms... with hail, in the lot. Just sitting, for a week. I special ordered it, finally took delivery, and had it for all of 10 days..... now I have a car payment due this week, on a vehicle I haven't been able to drive for over 2 weeks.
