Driver door agar no mater how hard I try to close it and alarm going off at any time

I have to take out my frustration somewhere about my 2013 Lincoln MKX!! The alarm keeps going off everywhere because the SUV is saying door ajar even though the door is closed!!!!!!! It starts honking on its own 2 to 4 times a night!!! Plus the doors never lock while driving because it thinks the driver door is open!! I wouldn't be surprised if I have a side collision and the side air bag doesn't deploy because the damn suv thinks the door is open. Lets hope that does not happen because of a damn door switch! Please make this a recall for your customer safety unless you don't care because I know its an issue with the Ford edge's as well and that's the same thing as a MKX but cheaper just YouTube "ford edge door ajar" and you will find some videos of the problem I am having.

Have you taken it to the dealership to get it repaired? Or are you just gonna come here and complain about it.....I had the dreaded "door ajar" problem, and the dealer fixed it under warranty....stop crying and get it fixed.....likely, still under warranty....good luck "one post wonder"...doubt you will be back....

If it's a 2014, it's most likely still under warranty @ your local Lincoln dealer.

I would imagine the dealer will just replace the switch, costly and will probably have to leave the car for a day. 

 

Most likely the switch in the door is either corroded or dirty. Anyway there is (or more concisely, might be) an easy fix for this. And that is to use electrical cleaner, sprayed at the correct spot to clean the switch.

 

Hunter24 measured the resistance across the corroded switch terminals and found that his switch was varying between 3 and 10 ohms. He discovered that the door ajar light would go off at around 3 ohms. So he tried using electrical contact cleaner (I bought a can at my local True Value, but I would ACE carries it as well), and reported that it was still working after several weeks (this was a year ago). He states you only need to remove one screw to access the switch with the spray. (Incidental, WD40 does not work on the Edge/MKX problem. Makes it worse).

2011edgese found you don't have to remove any screws, just aim the spray straw at an exact spot. He uploaded pictures in message #30 and 40.

BTW way, I was thinking of buying a set of ratcheting headrests for my 09 and wondering if you had ratcheting headrests, would you mind slapping a tape measure to measure the distance between the headrest posts? If you do, would you mind giving me an estimate of the diameter of the posts as well? I'd be deeply appreciative.

As for where to spray electrical cleaner, click on the link I previously posted above. The post that conrauns the pictures is about 19 posts down from the top (the one with two pictures attached).

 

If this doesn't fix the switch problem, most likely it's corroded internally and will need to be replaced. There are videos on YouTube as to how to do this. I can find the video link and post it here if you need.

 

If you feel uncomfortable in taking your door apart, believe the dealer can do it for couple of hundred or so. You could call and they should be able to quote price over the phone.

 

Also, there are others in the FordEdgeForum that have done it and can offer personal experience if you care to try it yourself. Time consuming, but not really too hard.

 

Others have just cut the wire going to the switvh, and others still have rigged a magnetic switch in place of the mechanical oem switch. (Haven't had this happen to my 09 but if it did, I would first try to spray it with electrical cleaner and if that didn't work, replace it.)

I just join this forum to see what others were posting about the door ajar problem on the 2011 MKX. I now have this problem full time. I just had the (hcu) hydraulic control unit replaced because the brake pedal started going almost all the way to the floor before I could stop the car. I had asked the dealership to also check the issue with the door ajar & dome light staying on. Their diagnosis was that it could be related to the fact that my battery was not performing to full capacity, and I should replace it with a Motorcraft battery. I will do that but has anyone else made a connection between the battery and the door ajar problem?

Typically it's the sensor in the door latch but a weak battery can cause all sorts of strange electrical problems.   If the battery is more than a couple of years old I'd replace it then if the problem continues you know it's the latch and you won't have to worry about the battery for 2-3 more years.

This forum saved me from madness today. After experiencing the door ajar issue two months after purchasing my 2012 MKX used in 2022, I fixed it by slamming the door a dozen times until the sensor registered it being closed. For five months I avoided opening the door and everything on the car worked great. Yesterday I was going on a long trip so I decided to remove my jacket and, brain in neutral, opened the door and aggravated the sensor again. No matter how many times I shut the door it would not satisfy the closed sensor condition. 
 

After researching and finding the suggestion to use contact cleaner I went down to a local Fleet Farm and purchased GUNK Electric Motor Contact Cleaner (around $7 for a 20oz can).  After removing the top screw on the door mechanism just above the latch, I sprayed deep inside the latch assembly for about 5 seconds. After shutting the door twice the sensor worked properly and hasn’t made a peep for about a dozen closures. Just wanted to respond to the forum to say thanks.
