This is from a C&D review of the MKX with the 2.7 and FWD, but it should apply to the Nautilus as well: "One might also expect that, by carrying nearly 300 pounds less than the all-wheel-drive model, the front-drive 2.7 turbo model might serve up quicker zero-to-60-mph acceleration times. (Or at least matching ones.) Nope. The best we could muster with the front-driver was a lackluster 6.9 seconds, 0.9 second behind the all-wheel-drive MKX and 1.3 seconds behind the Ford Edge Sport, which is powered by a detuned version of the same engine with 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. What gives? Low-speed traction. At anything beyond half throttle, the MKX just can’t get a grip. The comfort-oriented suspension allows serious rear-axle squat under acceleration, pitching the nose up and unloading the front wheels, resulting in fruitless wheelspin. If there are pavement irregularities or a whiff of steering input when the power comes in, the driver needs both hands on the wheel to keep pointed straight. Stability control actually seems to worsen this effect, applying the brake to one front wheel, then the other, generating a seesaw response. We’re talking about steering-wheel-yanking torque steer like you haven’t seen since a 1980s Saab Turbo. Much of the 2.7T’s extra power goes to waste when it can’t route excess torque to the rear wheels. I had a 2011 front wheel drive Limited. The steering wheel would turn completely out of your hand. That was the last FWD car I have ever owned. My wifes 2017 Infiniti Q50 has the twin turbo 3.0 and all wheel drive. That car snaps you as well. Mind you , she has no clue as to how much torque that car has. The only time the car ever accelerates to any degree is when I drive it on the highway if we take it somewhere. She drives like a little old lady. She had a 2015 Q50 and when her lease was up it had 24,000 Kilometers. Her 2018 she got mid August it has 2,900 as of yesterday. When ever I drive she says that I am gunning it. AWD Nautiluses are rare in LA, with most dealers having zero to one on their lots. Conversely, you can find AWD Edges (probably because its a high volume vehicle and there are a large number on dealer lots). Rick is a knowledgeable guy and I'm sure he made an informed choice. However, if I lease another one, it will be AWD again. The Nautilus feels like a different vehicle to me with FWD. Probably thinks if you take a 45 mph corner at 55 mph (and could probably take it at 65 and be perfectly safe) that you're about to fly off the road and crash. Drives me crazy. Landing at the dealer April 1. I laugh when my contact at the dealer said 5 days transport for 45 minute drive from the factory. MKXMark Posted March 12, 2019 Report Share Posted March 12, 2019 I drive a FWD MKZ 2.0, and while the power is adequate torque steer isn't really an issue. When I drove a service loaner MKC with the same motor I thought it was ridiculous, you had to fight it under full throttle. I'll be curious to see how a FWD Nautilus 2.7 is. The MKX is the wife's AWD 3.7 but I always drive when it's the two of us. She's used to my "sporting" driving style and I enjoy engaging sport mode in the twisties. Still finding it odd that it was delivered a month before its originally scheduled build date and was such a quick turnaround from the January 7 order date. I tend to agree, but everyone's circumstances are different. Our Nautilus will be my wife's daily driver and she wouldn't feel the benefit of the 2.7 very often the way she drives, so we opted for the 2.0. My daily driver is an Explorer Sport so I have the 3.5L turbo to satisfy my need for performance. If the Nautilus were my daily driver I would've more strongly considered the 2.7 after crunching the numbers to see how much it would increase my lease payments.
