Third Brake Light Lens

Recommended Posts

The lens for the third brake light (the one top/center) came off in my wife's hand. The light assembly works fine, just the lens/cover came off. It fits back on just fine but it looks like the thin sealant around the cover has decayed. Is there any issue with just applying a thin caulk bead and reinstalling the cover? Does the entire assembly need to be replaced?

Thanks

I ended up gluing it back on and I'll see what happens. I applied a very thin bead using a toothpick along the edge of the lens so that the glue only contacted the light assembly and not the car frame.

I have a similar issue but in my case I lost the lens completely. I believe the culprit was the car wash.  I'm attempting to remanufacture the lens using red plexiglass and glue. I won't know the results until I return to Florida (snowbird) in November. You would think they'd sell just a stick-on replacement lens. We can't be the only players in this game.  A full brake light replacement is expensive.

Third brake lens came off from the blower at the car wash because the glue had dried out.  Got a replacement unit only to find out half the lift gate has to be taken apart to replace the new light and lens.  Poor design by Lincoln to make servicing the brake light so difficult.  Any input on how to simplify putting in the new brake light assembly?image.thumb.jpeg.e3d31f5bb07083091cabb5252854df72.jpeg

My dealer told me you had to buy spoiler the light is in can't be changed. Have to order a new spoiler, paint to match, cost +/- $3000.

You tube sez it can be replaced by removing the spoiler and replacing brake light.
