akirby Posted September 13, 2021 Report Share Posted September 13, 2021 Has anyone else had noise issues with the 21” OEM Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires? The original set developed a loud roar at 23K miles. At the time there were no other tire choices so I replaced with the same and they’ve been nice and quiet until the last couple of months. Was riding in the back on the way to the beach and it was super loud again - at 46K miles. Like clockwork. I assume it threw a belt both times. The noise changes with the road surface. Reports of issues (e.g. interior delaminating causing failure of the NCS construction) are not uncommon. If not, your 'clockwork' noise issue is common with such tires at the circa 25K mileage. Regardless of warranty/tire wear estimates, decades of experience have taught that most tires are likely due for replacement many miles before owner's expectations with noisiness/comfort being a primary reason. RE Michelin tires: Back in the '70s, I had a French-made set of Michelin rubber go 93,000 miles but I would never expect that experience to be repeated. I replaced the OEM Michelin tires on the MKX at circa 24K miles with Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring for stiffer sidewalls & longer wear...practically none at 20K. I would consider the Coopers but they don’t make a 21” tire. The Michelin’s are really the only other reasonable choice and I love Michelins. Just hoping they stay quiet. enigma-2 Posted September 16, 2021 Report Share Posted September 16, 2021 I had Michelin’s that did this at 21-24k miles. Went back and was told that that's normal. The way they achieve a smooth and quiet tire is to use soft rubber on the outer tread layer. (Tires are constructed of several different layers of rubber, each with their own specific characteristics. Anyway, after the soft layer it wears off, (>20k), it goes into a hard rubber layer to give tire a long life. But hard rubber is noisy and rides hard. Nothing you can do about this. I'm running 20" Pirelli Scorpion's now. Nice and quiet. When they get noisy, I'll just replace them. One brand I've used, a little noiser and a little rougher, are Bridgestone Duelers.
