Timmer
My 2016 MKX Reserve is currently at the dealer being upgraded to Apple CarPlay compatible. 1. Update SYNC 3 software from version 2.0 to 2.2. 2. Upgrade and replace to the Apple CarPlay compatible USB hub. Turned out the dealer didn't have the USB hub in stock, so it needed to be FedExed in. That meant they needed to keep my MKX over the weekend. No big deal as I have a 2017 MKC loaner. Nice car, but I miss my 22-way massaging seats. (I'm spoiled!) I'm looking for some Apple CarPlay training, tips and tricks so I can hit the ground running once I get my MKX back. I'll be checking the Interweb and YouTube for info, tutorials, etc. but would especially appreciate (and trust) the advice I can get from others on our Forum. Thanks, Timmer
Ruby
Using CarPlay is quite straightforward. Plug your iPhone into the USB port and Sync will automatically recognize it and display an iPhone-like screen on the Sync display. Choose whichever icon is appropriate for your needs and you are done.
wbferrara
It is pretty straightforward, but do watch your data usage unless you have an unlimited data plan. Have to admit I like the Sync native nav better, but Carplay is a good backup where the Sync data might be too old. Timmer
mosh00
Overall I really like CarPlay. I prefer the Apple navigation over Sync. Also like the ability to better control my podcast playback. My biggest gripe is that the outside temperature isn't displayed anywhere. I wish it was displayed in the interment cluster display. Timmer
Update: I got the CarPlay interface linked to my iPhone and explored it a bit yesterday. Fairly straightforward in that there are few apps. CarPlay really doesn't do much, unfortunately... My initial impression is that CarPlay is limiting compared to Sync 3. Some Sync 3 features are missing or difficult to access when CarPlay is chosen. Also, the Iphone must be tethered via Apple OEM lightning cable. No bluetooth connectivity. I'm not seeing how to change AM, FM, or USB (iPod, MP3 Player) audio sources easily when in CarPlay? - or how to change radio stations or presets, for that matter. Also, what is the least cumbersome way to revert from CarPlay to Sync 3 or vice-versa? - All I've come up with is to un-tether lightning cable from the phone (or at the MKX USB.) I'm not familiar with using Apple Maps for navigation, so at this point I'll withhold comment or comparison to Sync 3 Nav. The real-time traffic advisories and radar / speed trap warnings of Waze seem attractive, but CarPlay compatibility isn't happening in the foreseeable future. Maybe it's a Google/Apple rivalry thing. Apparently there is a settings work-around so Waze will run in the background and provide advisory prompts, but it sounds inefficient and cumbersome at best. At this point I'm underwhelmed by CarPlay. Maybe that will change. But maybe not... Timmer Edited July 18, 2017 by Timmer
akirby
It's simple - for the most part it's either/or - carplay or sync 3 but not both at the same time. Timmer

Yes, at first blush simple, akirby. But it's the "for the most part" things and workarounds that I'm trying to learn more about... akirby
For sure you lose access to anything on the touch screen. I assume you lose infotainment control since carplay is using that too. I assume you can still use voice commands for other things like climate control, etc. But I'm not actually using carplay so I'm just guessing. When using CarPlay, Apple's Siri takes over the voice command function. I believe that includes everything, including no longer being able to use voice commands for climate control. akirby
I wasn't sure about that but it makes sense. In that case it takes over sync 3 completely so the only things you can do at that point is with hard buttons. Timmer

Thanks, Timmer So this may sound obvious but did you have Sync 3 with your 16? Mine came with My Lincoln Touch. So did they change out the whole system or did yours comes with Sync 3 2.0? That is the only one I got through Sync3!!! Edited August 12, 2017 by NOTMY911
