Audio Off

Went to lunch today, and on the way home, I noticed there was no music playin after I had gone a mile or so..homescreen showed Audio Off just above my phone information. I pushed the Audio button on the center of the volume control several times, and nothing. I thought, oh well when I get home, it will probably go back on if I restart the car. Nope, nothing is turning it back on, so I guess another trip to the dealer on Monday. Fuse maybe?

Must have been it. Let it sit for about an hour, got in and hit the Acc, and music started playing. It seemed like before when it was updating, there was a message on the screen, and it isn't set to anything but the drive I have in the USB port...weird, but no trip to the Lincoln Dealer Monday I guess.

Firmware updates are via WiFi and actually very rare. there were not multiple updates during the time of your ownership. The updates would not occur while you are on the road driving.

What you are describing above should never happen - its never happened to me in the six months I've had the car.

You've described frequent reboots, which is a problem with the system.

What this sounds like is a system crash. I had the exact same situation a few months back. Waited for the car to power down and about an hour later, all was good.

Dealer can tell you if there is a fault code, but I doubt there is a problem.

Ford has a video available which describes the WiFi update process. If you have automatic firmware updates selected, they will take place anytime you are connected to a WiFi server, parked or driving. If you leave the area and loose the WiFi connection it will continue automatically the next time you connect. (Remember, not all open WiFi servers are safe).

**There is one way to tell if a system update has taken place. You will get a small notification icon in the upper right-hand corner of you screen. Tap it and it will give you details on the update. After this, the screen will go back to its standard layout.**

Believe that there is also a history screen you can check (*I think*) that details system history. This can tell you if an update had occured during the questionable period or not.

A system that does random reboots could be nothing more that a transient software fault (think Space Shuttle's launch fault) or a more serious problem like a faulty connector or some device on the CAN system feeding faulty codes.

Did you have a USB drive plugged in when this occurred?

I only connect the car to the wi-fi hot spot on my phone every few weeks, just to see if any updates are available. I did not connect it the day this happened. I always have music on a flash drive as my source, and I always leave that in place in the USB port. It has about 900 songs on it. It was playing on my way to lunch. But on the way home, it wasn't, and I didn’t immediately notice it. I've driven it at least 5 times since, and it is working fine now..

I didn't comment on this earlier when I read your original post because it sounded too obvious,   but I also have the same problem some times with my phone.  When it's last playing via USB from my phone,  if I go to turn the audio on and the phone is not plugged in,  it says AUDIO OFF in the same way.   It should say can't find source or something more obvious.   If you hit the audio button in the frame,  then change source to FM, etc.   it will fix it.

Just had this happen for the first time since I had my 2016(March) MKX BL.  Turn on engine and Audio Off, cannot turn it on.  No USB connections, no Android auto or anything else.  Was leaving work and no WiFi setup for any updates possible.  Not like Sirius updates that splash the screen it is updating.  Tried Navigation lady and she was talking okay.  The Revel demo could be played through the speakers just fine (could not control volume).  No calls could be made with paired phone since no volume to hear.  But no matter whether pushed the console volume/power button or the screen power, nothing.  Turned off, let it sit for 15 minutes came back, nothing.  Drove home, quiet ride, no audio but left nav lady on so someone would talk to me!  :)  Shut down, ate dinner, came out and still nothing.

This morning, of course it works again.

Anyone ever come up with a good reason?

Occasionally, the system will hiccup.  I've gotten in the car and had a black scree, for example. The only thing to do at that point is a soft reset.  Press the volume button down, and hit the tune button (somebody correct me if that sequence is wrong) and the system will restart.

Its a minor annoyance - happens to me maybe once every four months.
