Door water leak

punch-card

Recommended Posts

I am thinking there was another person own complained about water in the door, But I notice there was water the other day, and pull the door trim and got a little drip, but it rained most of today, and this was the result.... So guess it time for a trip to the dealer.

I will advise other to do a trim check, especially after heavy or long rain....

Water leaks appear to be one of the most reoccurring issues with F150, Edge, and MKX forum owners...sun roofs, firewalls, A-pillars, & door panels. Since all vehicle complaints, regardless of manufacturer, seem to be similar, I would expect the MKX is not immune. It only takes one very tiny lack of sealant to create a leak, i.e. an assembly line caulking error. In six decades of vehicle purchases, I have never experienced any water leaks, but perhaps I've been fortunate.

This continues to be a problem with my MKX - right front door.  It started in February the first big rain the car sat outside.  There was so much water in the door panel it was running out the speaker.  It went into the shop shortly there after where they (AutoNation Lincoln Clearwater) pulled both panels on the left and right door.  They thought is had something to do with rubber grommet the cable fits through to move the mirror.  That is what they said.  I was under the assumption that it was fixed. It is not the case.  It has been back to my local dealer in the Midwest were I purchased the car from twice now for the same problem.  Then again last week it rained and the door is still leaking water.  Not as much as the first time but it still leaks.  I am at the point of giving up on this one.  A very unhappy camper.

The saga continues, so I took the car to the dealer this week, to have the water in the door addressed.  Well the first day and half, the mechanics didn't understand what the issue was and said the could not replicate the issues, so I went in to pick up the LMX and this time the service manager was there. So I showed him the video and he at that point was thinking it was a fluke. I showed him on the driver door how I did by pulling the plastic in the bottom front corner of the door. Of course the driver door did not really show anything, but I told him that the issue was on the passenger door, so we were both looking at the door, and I said look here is how i did it..... Out comes the water, immediate he got me a new rental and said they would pull off all the door panels and reseal them.  So the Wednesday afternoon I picked up the car and the service manager promised me that they had addressed the issues, but if I see any more problems bring it back in. Well Thursday it rain heavy again, and I noticed the passenger door had some water on the seal, tried it again, and out drains the water...

Soooooo, this afternoon another trip to the dealer, as I pulled up the service manager was standing there, I pointed to him to come to see me... I told him that it had done it again and I would show him the second video, but I said that I noticed water on the rear passenger door threshold and ask him to pull the plastic... sure enough water comes dripping out, then he call over the head mechanic and the talk about it "we have never seen this before"....  Again it must just be your vehicle, but the manager says that he wants the Lincoln Engineer to come see this, so Tuesday I drop it off again..   And we continue you on talking about and I said this MUST be a design flaw.... the service manager reply, no that could be... He said look, I drove this MKX home last night and I did not see the issue, watch I will go try it on my door.....

What a shocked face!!! Out drips water out of his door....

Sooo  ....  WARNING  try this on your door(s) [watch the video on what I did] after you have had rain and make sure to video it..... There were NO tail-tail sign of water on his door, but sure enough it came out, and I suspect that Many of you out there have the same exact problem....

If not for my sake, try it for yourself, the last thing you want is either rust or mold building up inside, or ruining your speakers...

punch...thanks for your video. After viewing it I immediately inspected my doors for water accumulation or leakage and found none. I would have been surprised (and very disappointed) to have any water present since I regularly wash the X and carefully wipe the lower door and sill areas to remove road grime. Fortunately, I have never noted any issues in those areas.

Thanks again Mike for your detailed description of the issue and conversations with the dealer. Keep us posted as an aid to avoiding the problem.

I'm seeing the same problem now too after a full day of rain. I noticed that everytime I close the door, a little bit of water splashes out on to the pavement. I pulled the panel as shown in the video above and water comes pouring out. I'm seeing this on all 4 doors.

Not good.

Dopie,

I finally got mine fixed after the dealership with apply what the service manager called (I think) a sheet sealant, I am thinking like rubber sealant that you would use for ice on the roof.  I will look at the receipt and see if they described exactly what they did.  What the service manager said that it to the tech 6 hours to apply the sealant. And I just had a couple of heavy rains last week, and I did not see any leaking.  But I would do the same thing I did have the service manager pull the door and watch it drain out....

I really think it this issue is bigger than what think, I really don't think that enough people have tested it after a big rain and found the issue.

Good Luck!

Mike

I would say either get it on video, or when you know there is water, take it in the dealer, and let them pull the door panel and try to get a service manager (someone that counts).

We just found our 2016 MKX doing this today on rear passenger door.  Coming out the speaker onto the WeatherTech's thankfully.

Any piece of advice to tell the dealer?

Thanks.

Any idea how the water is getting inside the door? The point of entry.

Could it be from the side mirrors? I noticed a couple of small hole get exposed when the mirrors are folded in.

Dopie,
I am not exactly sure because the dealer did not say exactly where they found the issue, it took them two times to get it right.
If you see this post below, "KRK" replaced the seal and seem to fix it. You might PM KRK or gstein
and see if they have any comments.

Check this other thread, "Water from door speaker grill" KRK posted a photo.

Thanks for the tips. The last two days we had rain and while driving down the interstate I noticed a gurgle sound as if water was draining from a water bottle on both days. The sound only occurred while driving in the rain. I thought it was coming from our sons water bottle in his backpack but wasn't. Next time it rains I'll check the doors. Would driving through the car wash work the same?

For me the rain was about a min of an hour, but just do the pull test, and if you can get your finger tips on the foam padding on the edge check if it feels moist.

A car was would probably accelerate the process since it was under higher pressure. Look for the droplets of water on the door stoop, that is a pretty good sign.

But not absolute, because the one car on the lot we tried had no signs of water, until the pull test.

I've been hand washing my MKX since the October 2015 delivery & periodically checking for leaks with no issues detected. However, when washing I leave the mirrors folded out so as not to expose the holes in the mirror base when folded. The mirror base gaskets appear to have integrity that would prevent water entry via that route.

I'm a little confused about this. Aren't there drain holes in the bottom of the doors to drain any water that gets in, out? Is the problem that the drains are clogged or misformed?

In the door yes but it sounds like this is between the door and the trim panel.

Yes there is a plastic shield between the plastic door panel and the door frame inside the shield, the problem is the shield is not keeping the water from the inside, which is why (as I understand) my dealer completely recovered the shield with new material.  Which seems to solved the problem in my case.

As for the drain holes, they drain just fine and always has drained. And I "think" Cosmos is correct that it is related to mirrors being folded when there is large quantities of rain. Hopefully they correct the issue in the 2017 model.....

From the very beginning, I might expect small amount of water in that area, but I didn't pay $4k for the luxury package with the good sound system only to have the speakers ruined and rusted out 3 to 5 years down the road....

Isn't there a splash shield to protect the inside panel?

According to the service manager, the speakers are sealed from the rear. "So they should be any damage" (quoting service manager)
But given KRK thread Water from door speaker grill I have my doubts, unless I would see it with my own eyes....
I guess I have lived in the  "Show-Me State" for 10 years, I have adopted the moto... :D

Completely agree. Sounds like the QC isn't functioning on the production line. Are the speakers ruined?
