I don't think our 2016 does that but I'll doublecheck - maybe I just don't pay attention to it.

I wonder if they changed it.   I know I've had issues where the smallest obstacle would cause it not to latch.   This might fix that issue.

Just a quick update on the lift gate.  I was at the dealer today to have the molded splash guards and the rear bumper protector installed.  I tried the lift gate on three different MKX's while I was there two on the showroom floor and one of another customer.  They all work exactly as mine.  It seems that last few inches just drop and then it locks.  Seems strange, but that is the way it is.

yep my 2016 does that.

I have an early build (September 2015) with a hatch that functions in the same manner as reported here earlier. However, I've always considered the hatch to open/close with a secure thud, not an annoying "bang". The very sturdy latching thongs that draw the hatch securely closed (and provide a thud when releasing the hatch) are reassuring of quality to me. I did, however, lubricate the latching mechanism to aid in its operation.

Cosmos 36, I like the thud  terminology better then the bang.  Let's go with that.  Thanks!

I have a 2016 MKX.  The lift gate started acting up by raising about 1 foot at a time after each dash or key fob button push. It would reach the fully open position this way but could only be closed manually. Disconnecting the battery overnight had no effect. The repair required the dealer to install a new motorized power lift gate support.  I hope this is an isolated problem and does not become a continuing issue. Wonder if anyone else has encountered this.

My late build 2016 rear hatch closes slow and smooth, with a "click" at the end as it latches.

I was sure the rear hatch was malfunctioning after it started to close a few times while I was in the midst of loading groceries, etc.  I sure felt like an idiot when my dealers suggestion that I keep my feet clear of the foot closure activator solved the problem...

Further proof that "idiot" is not a stretch for me... Haha!

First one I can remember.   On older models the struts can fail.

The one that usually gets me is the lip of the cargo protector gets in the way of the latch.   At a glance it looks fine but it needs to be pushed back about 1/4 inch.

On several occasions after opening the hatch and loading items in the rear, the wife would reach up to activate the hatch closing by pressing the switch on the hatch driver's side, then enter the car to note a warning that the hatch was still open. After observing this issue several times, I finally detected that because she is short and only barely able to reach the switch, she was not fully depressing the switch...just softly poking the rubber cover. It was an "Aha" lesson for her.

Anyone ever drive away with the hatch all the way open, or am I the only idiot?

Well, I didn't "drive away", but I did back out of a parking spot and put the X in drive before I noticed it.

I did and I'm sure for my 2013 I could close it while in gear.  For my 2016, I have to stop and put it in Park before I can close it.

I have done it as well.  Two miles down the interstate and noticed all of the wind noise.  Pulled over to close it.  What interests me is that Timmer said his late build 2016 closes  smooth and slow with a "click".  As I stated in an earlier post, my closes with a thud.  Other brands  I have looked at do not do that including our 2011 Lexus RX and the newer Acura, Cadillac, Infinity, etc.

I guess I am happy I haven't driven with my open, but I have pressed the lid close, walked away only to come back at work or shopping minutes to hours later to find the hatch open.

Nope. I'm right there with you, enigma.
