Memory Stick formatting issues with large memory sticks

Recommended Posts

I like to leave a 32GB or 64GB memory stick plugged in, in each of my cars.

I discovered that there can be an issue with these larger drives and cars, cars don't like them. I'm not sure about Lincoln because I avoided the problem by formatting prior to using.

Here's the issue:

1- Cars designers have set the USB readers at FAT32. If your stick is formatted exFat or NTFS, the car won't read it.

2- The sticks come formatted exFat or NTFS

3- Win10 doesn't like to format FAT32 anymore. It is not listed as a formatting option.

The work around:

1- Format in DOS, this didn't work for me but has for others

2- Use a 3rd party partitioning program. I used AOMEI, there are others, it is a free download and did the job

I now have a fully loaded 64GB stick in the car functioning well

Lincoln instructs that all map updates be put on exFat formatted 32GB memory. That's what I did and had no problems. My USB stick that holds music is also 32GB and also exFat formatted.

I use a 128GB exfat formatted music stick in mine. Works great, indexes in less than a minute after starting the car.

I have a 1TB hard drive laying in the bottom of the center consul connected via a retractable USB cable. Takes a bit of time to index, but works great one done
