GPS issues

Recommended Posts

Has anyone noticed either of these two things?  1)  some posted speed limits show up incorrectly?  For instance near me highway the speed limit changed a year ago from 55MPH to 60MPH or in some stretches 65MPH or 70MPH and our MKX shows the original 55 MPH on the display.  Doesn't this get updated thru the WI-FI data link connection?  2) In 3 cases using following the GPS directions, when we reached the address it would announce the address was on the "Left", when actually it was on the "Right", or vice versa.  Again, does the GPS get updated thru the Sync 3 system?  ;)

Yes, I've noted both of the navigation discrepancies you mentioned and several more. Sometimes I just roll with it and use some common sense, e.g. I know that addresses are odd-numbered on one side of the street and even-numbered on the opposite side or tell folks that my condo at the coast is actually located north of XYZ bridge, not south as GPS/Google Map/etc. indicates. I consider ALL navigation aids to offer only tolerable location approximations, except of course, when flying to a specific airport.

Speed limits are part of the map data and is not automatically updated. We haven't seen map updates for sync 3 yet but I would assume there will be a charge to upgrade just like everyone else and other Ford vehicles.

Road overpass that were opened in 2014 does not show up on the map.

Way to go Ford, my wife Garmin GPS (~$100 at Costco) got free update for life and are updated 3 to 5 time a years.

This is not a Ford problem. It's an issue with all OEM navigation systems. I face similar upgrade fees for my BMW and Acura.

Well, Lincoln (or Ford) is selling me a car with outdate map so its should be their problem.

Humm.... I was told that the speed limits on NAV were from Travel Link

From Sync 3 manual section: SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link

SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link is available on vehicles equipped with navigation and only in select markets. You must activate and subscribe to receive SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link information. It helps you locate the best gas prices, find movie listings, get current traffic alerts, view the weather map, get accurate ski conditions and see current sports scores. See Apps (page 83).

The system calculates a reasonable efficient route based on available speed limits, traffic, and road conditions. You may know a local short cut that is more efficient at a given time than the route provided by SYNC 3, but you should expect a slight difference in minutes or miles with the SYNC 3 route.

Sirius has its own database of maps with speed limits that it uses to calculate routes but that's not the same as what the in car nav uses or displays. Different databases. Edited by akirby

NOTMY911...it's my understanding that our MKXs are delivered with SiriusXM radio AND Sirius Traffic-Travel, i.e. separate subscription programming. The radio is a 6 month free trial while the Traffic-Travel functions for 6 years. My free trial radio expired...I didn't renew. I haven't checked lately, but I believe my Traffic-Travel is still functioning. The speed limit display also continues to function.

Unfortunately in Canada the Traffic-Travel is only free for...  6 months.

The tollway and expressways in Illinois changed from 65 to 70 several years before my car was made, and it still shows 65 on the screen..I think the change was 3 or 4 years ago, but not sure.

I'll have to disagree with you.

There are two major providers of map data in the world.  I know that one of the brands was Navteq and the other was something like TeleAtlas.  Every OEM navigation system uses one or the other.  If the data are out date for Sync 3 in your neighborhood, chances are the data will be out of date for about half the cars on the road.

Ford should source quality products, but holding them responsible for Navteq's accuracy in your neighborhood would be like compaining to Ford if Sirrius programming was low quality.

Its also unrealistic to expect Ford (or any car company) to check the data in every neighborhood in every city in North America.

That said, when I had a similar issue with my BMW, they gave me a complementary data update.

You can submit missing roads or other changes to the map owner's website. Forgot the name. Walkabout is correct - not Ford's fault.

Really, so if your $5,000 19 speakers Revel Ultima option does not perform properly its not Lincoln fault...  Your bias is showing again.

As walkabout said it not really controled by ford. This is why navigation systems in cars are pointless and where things like AA or CP is the future. I know I can go on Waze or google maps and get accurate up to date information.

It has nothing to do with performance of the stereo system. If there are only a couple of sources for the map data and none are completely up to date for all areas then what could Ford possibly do? You think they should create their own map data?

Here's another one that happened today.  Even though I know the route to a relatives house I put it in the NAV to see how it would route.  At one exit off the Tollway you take route 95th Street East-bound.  The NAV said take 95th Street West-bound.  I decided, "lets try it, it must know something I don't". Right after exiting 95th Street West it said, "take a u-turn......."  It wanted me to be going East-bound!  The two exits (East and West) have existed forever.  I must say my Garmin is much more precise than this NAV.

I have a Garmin (although it is admitedly an older unit), Tom Tom, Note 5 running Google Maps, and my last three vehicles (Acura, BMW, and Lincoln) all had factory nav. They all have lousy directions every once in a while. Google Maps can be bizarre at times, even in LA (where basically every map database is accurate). Nature of the beast.

Sync 3 had a reasonably nice navigation system with a few annoyances.
